The Electromagnetic Crack Detector will locate cracks and other defects in samples which will be magnetized by passing a current through them. When properly used, the Magnetic Crack Detector will locate defects like fatigue cracks, heat cracks, grinding checks, forging laps, shrinks and tears in casting, improper welds, and inherent defects in metals like seams, inclusions also as cracks thanks to overstressing of parts.

Selecting and Designing the Magnetic Crack Detector

The diameter of the Sample: The greater the diameter, the greater the output current required. the essential thumb rule is 500Amps per inch diameter.

Surface only or Subsurface crack detection: For surface only cracks, AC output Magnetic Crack Detector is suggested. For subsurface and surface cracks, HWDC output Magnetic Crack Detector is suggested.

Type of test to be conducted:

For heavy stationary objects that are difficult to maneuver, the Mobile or Portable Magnetic Crack detector is suggested

For on the work welding and finished welding inspection and such tasks, the Portable Magnetic Crack Detector is suggested

For objects which will be moved about, the Stationary Model Magnetic Crack Detector is suggested

For large sample quantity testing and for faster testing, the Stationary Magnetic Crack Detector is suggested

For Stationary Models, the Bed Length is meant supported the working length (job length is that the length of the part being tested)

  1. Receive instruction from supervisor 
  2. Clean working area 
  3. Switch ON tester 
  4. Check Ecoklin K solution circulating pump operating or not.
  5. Check Ecoklin K level in the tank (25 Lit) up to the required Market level.
  6. Wait till tubes get active
  7. Make bath solution in-tray as follows -  
                                    a) Mix MAGNAFLOROFLUX LUMINOUS powder 1 gm/Lit. in Ecoklin K solution 
                                    b) Magnaflux powder concentration to be maintained up to 0.3ml in a conical flask 
                                    c) A deposit of nearly 5 divisions gives a satisfactory result 

8. Do the calibration as per the procedure given below. 
  • Adjust heads at the required position.
  • Clamp the part.
  • Set Magnetisation selector switch at COMB position.
  • Put testpiece on the part.
  • pour bath solution on the test piece & press the footswitch at a time for magnetizing the test piece.
  • Declamp the part.
  • Inspect the part under the dark area with the help of ultraviolet light, if a crack line not shown then the part is accepted put a white color dot on the part and send for demagnetizer. if the crack line persists then the part is scraped and must be identified by Red color.


1. After Crack inspection all parts to be demagnetized as follows
  • For smaller parts (length & Dia up to 300mm) 3 strokes have to be given 
  • For bigger parts ( length & Dia above 300mm) 5 strokes have to be given 
Field Meter can be used for ensuring that parts are demagnetized
(+-2 Divisions for the part to be accepted)

2. Handel the parts carefully to avoid nicks and damages while loading/unloading the parts on the machine.

3. Avoid metal contact while putting the parts in material handling equipment and in transportation.

3. ECOKLIN K solution to be replaced on monthly basis.
